Who Is ALICE?
ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These are the people we depend on every day—educators, healthcare workers, and others who contribute to our quality of life—yet they struggle to earn enough to support their own families. ALICE households face difficult decisions, like choosing between quality childcare and paying rent, leading to long-term challenges that affect not just ALICE but entire communities.
The State of ALICE in Texas
The 2023 ALICE Report revealed the first comprehensive look at financial hardship in Texas using ALICE metrics since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic disrupted traditional patterns of living, working, learning, saving, and spending.
The 2024 update shows that financial hardship in Texas continues to be influenced by the lasting economic impacts of the pandemic. Despite recovery efforts, official measures significantly undercount the true scope of the challenges faced by ALICE households.
